Dan Lawrence frustrates Surrey with unbeaten 87

Essex are 202 for four in reply to the reigning champions' 395.

An unbeaten 87 from Essex's Dan Lawrence frustrated champions Surrey on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match at the Kia Oval.

Lawrence held Essex's top order together as they reached 202 for four in reply to Surrey's 395 before bad light ended play with 21 overs not bowled.

Kent continued to prosper at Edgbaston as Ollie Robinson became their second homegrown youngster in successive days to score a century against Warwickshire.

After Bromley-born 21-year-old Zak Crawley scored 108 on the first day, Robinson, a 20-year-old from Sidcup, followed it up with his maiden first-class ton, finishing with 143.

Kent then made strong progress towards turning their hefty 504 for nine declared into a victory when they reduced Warwickshire to 84 for three.

Duanne Olivier and Ben Coad continued Yorkshire's dominance against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl after Gary Ballance had top scored with 148.

Hampshire's James Vince and Joe Weatherley both departed inside the first six overs to leave the hosts 11 for two, after Yorkshire had declared on a mammoth 554 for seven.

Tom Abell (101) and George Bartlett (133) hit tons as Somerset amassed 403 before reducing Nottinghamshire to 25 for two in their second innings for a lead of 115.

In Division Two Haseeb Hameed delivered a timely reminder to the England Test selectors with his first century since 2016 as Lancashire moved into a first-innings lead against Middlesex at Lord's.

The 22-year-old only opened the innings because Alex Davies had injured his thumb while keeping wicket on the first day, but he made the most of the opportunity with 117.

A first-wicket century stand with Keaton Jennings (52) was the platform for the visitors to take control of the game and they ended the day on 267 for four – a lead of two runs.

Acting captain Ben Cox (100 not out) became the third centurion of the innings as Worcestershire declared on 553 for six against Leicestershire.

The visitors then picked up four wickets, including the vital one of Mark Cosgrove, leaving the Foxes still needing another 224 runs to avoid the follow-on.

James Bracey hit a stylish 65 to lead Gloucestershire's reply to Derbyshire's first innings total of 291.

By the close the hosts had reached 202 for five with skipper Chris Dent contributing 33, and Gareth Roderick and Ryan Higgins both unbeaten on 33.

Luke Wells scored an unbeaten 98 as Sussex added 131 for the final three wickets to reach 202 against Durham at Emirates Riverside.

Durham reached 31 for one in their second innings to lead by 53 runs going into day three.

Northamptonshire openers Ricardo Vasconcelos (126 not out) and Rob Newton (85 not out) shared an unbroken partnership of 234 in response toΒ  Glamorgan's 570 for eight declared.
