WTA supports Williams scheduling complaint

The Women’s Tennis Association has echoed Serena Williams’s confusion over her being forced to play on Court 2.

The seven seed spoke out after both she and sister Venus had been scheduled to play on Court 2, noting that the top-seeded men’s matches had all been allocated to Centre Court and Court 1.

“They like to put us on Court 2, me and Venus, for whatever reason,” she complained. “I haven’t figured it out yet. Maybe one day we’ll figure it out, I don’t know.”

Serena Williams is a four-time Wimbledon singles champion, the defending champion of Wimbledon, and a 13-time Grand Slam singles champion,” Stacey Allaster, WTA chairman, said in a statement. “I share her disappointment.”

However, the All England Club has insisted that no disrespect or bias against either the Williams sisters or women players in general should be inferred by the scheduling. “There is certainly no intention to favour any player or players,” it said.

Serena will next face Russia’s Maria Kirilenko.
