Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beats Bernard Tomic at the Rogers Cup to set up a quarter-final showdown with Andy Murray in Montreal.

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cruised into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup with a straight-sets win over Bernard Tomic this morning.

The Frenchman remains on course to defend his title after winning 7-6(7) 6-3 in one hour and 21 minutes to move three wins away from completing his defence.

Nothing could separate both men in a fiercely competitive first set that saw neither player lose serve, with a tie-break needed to determine the opener.

With Tomic leading 7-6, Tsonga, who came from behind to beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the previous round, dug deep and won three successive points to draw first blood.

The manner of that first-set win appeared to dampen the Australian's enthusiasm, as Tsonga coasted to the victory from there.

He will face second seed and two-time winner Andy Murray in the last eight.
