Heather Watson is out of the Rogers Cup after losing in straight sets to Andrea Petkovic.

Heather Watson has been eliminated from the Rogers Cup at the second-round stage after suffering defeat at the hands of Andrea Petkovic.

The British number one started well but could not maintain her form as Petkovic hit back to register a 6-4 6-3 victory.

After recording two wins in qualifying as well as a first-round demolition of Irina Falconi, Watson was in confident mood and that showed as she raced into 3-0 and 4-2 advantages.

However, she dropped serve twice in succession at the end of the first set to allow Petkovic to move ahead, and the writing was on the wall as the German moved to within a game of the match in the second.

Watson retrieved one of the breaks of serve, but Petkovic immediately struck back to earn her place in the last 16.
