British number four Dan Evans is out of the Citi Open after suffering a straight-sets defeat to sixth seed Jack Sock.

Dan Evans has bowed out of the Citi Open at the third-round stage after losing in straight sets to Jack Sock.

The British number four had impressed in wins over Benjamin Becker and Grigor Dimitrov but he struggled to cope with the big serve of the American, who ran out a 6-1 7-5 winner.

Evans had plenty of momentum heading into the last-16 clash in Washington but he quickly found himself 5-0 behind to the world number 26 and although the Birmingham-based player avoided the bagel, he found himself with an uphill task at the start of the second.

Sock saw two more break points come and go in a closely-fought set and he was almost made to pay as Evans missed out on a set point on his opponent's serve.

In the next game, Evans failed to convert a game point which would have guaranteed himself a tie-break, and he could only watch on as Sock finally broke through before serving out the match to complete the win in just under 76 minutes.
