Low determined Doonhamers can dump out the Dons

The midfielder scored in Aberdeen's League Cup final shoot-out victory over Inverness in 2014.

Queen of the South's Nicky Low helped Aberdeen to their last cup final win five years ago but is aiming to thwart their bid for silverware this season.

The midfielder came off the bench to score from the spot in the 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Inverness in the 2014 League Cup final at Parkhead, after the game had ended goalless.

It was Derek McInnes' first trophy win as Dons boss and the first for the club in 19 years.

Aberdeen have come close to adding to that achievement on several occasions since but Low, 27, who signed for Gary Naysmith's Championship side in January after leaving Irish outfit Derry, will have no qualms about ending the Dons' hopes this season in Sunday's William Hill Scottish Cup last-16 tie at Pittodrie.

He said: "I don't really remember much about the final. It was a hard day, the whole week was hard. I remember Barry Robson said to me leading up to it that it is always hard to focus as you are so excited as a young boy. He told a few younger lads to enjoy it.

"We tried to enjoy it but  you didn't until you watched the videos back and you saw how happy it was.

"It has been a few years but they have had excellent cup runs since then, they have been in finals and semi-finals consistently.

"Before that they were getting put out by lesser teams so on that side of things they have done really well although knowing him (McInnes), he will be disappointed not to add to that.

"It is part and parcel of football that you join new teams and you come up against old clubs but obviously when we go up there on Sunday we will try to win and get into the next round.

"But it is going to be a tough game, they are a good team."

Low helped the Doonhamers beat another of his former teams, Dundee, in the last round.

And he revealed that veteran striker Stephen Dobbie, who has scored  a remarkable 37 goals so far this season in his second spell at Palmerston, keeps reminding him that Queens beat Dundee and Aberdeen on their way to the final in 2008 where they lost 3-2 to Rangers.

Low said: "Dobs has mentioned that a few times so hopefully if we beat Aberdeen it can be the same outcome for us.

"We get him the ball and he scores goals. Hopefully we can feed him a few chances to score."
