Roma reportedly make a breakthrough in negotiations to sign Chris Smalling as they prepare a bid of £18m plus bonuses for the Manchester United centre-back.

Roma have reportedly made a breakthrough in their negotiations for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling.

The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico and impressed enough during his 37 appearances for the Italian outfit to try to make the move permanent.

United are open to the idea of selling Smalling, but previous talks had broken down due to a sizeable difference in the valuation of the player by both clubs.

However, Sky Sports Italia reports that there has now been a breakthrough, with Roma lining up a bid of £18m plus bonuses.

Manchester United had initially been holding out for a £20m approach but could lower their demands in order to raise quick funds for other targets this summer.

The Red Devils signed Donny van de Beek earlier this week and have also been linked with moves for Jadon Sancho and Dayot Upamecano.
