Chapecoense appoint Vagner Mancini as new manager

Chapecoense appoint veteran Brazilian coach Vagner Mancini as their new manager following the plane crash that killed most of their players and coaching staff.

Chapecoense have confirmed the appointment of Vagner Mancini as their new manager following the plane crash that killed most of their players and coaching staff.

A total of 71 people, including team boss Caio Junior, lost their lives in the accident, which came as they were making their way to Colombia to compete in the Copa Sudamericana final.

Mancini has coached more than a dozen clubs, including Santos, Gremio, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama, and must now put together an entire squad for the new season, which starts in late January.

"Vagner Mancini will take charge of the team with the responsibility for maintaining the work that was being done," Chapecoense said in a statement.

The Brazilian club are due to compete in the Copa Libertadores - South America's equivalent of the Champions League - next season for the first time.
