Gilberto Silva, one of Arsenal's Invincibles, claims that the Gunners are still number one following Liverpool's 44-game unbeaten run ending at the hands of Watford.

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva has admitted that he was expecting Liverpool to match the Gunners' Invincibles before their 3-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday.

Goals from Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney ended a remarkable 44-game unbeaten run in the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp's side, ensuring that Arsenal's 49-game streak remains the longest league run without defeat in English football history.

Writing for The Times, Silva, who played 32 times in Arsenal's unbeaten 2003-04 campaign, said: "I was expecting them to do it.

"For most people it was unexpected that they would lose at Watford but we are still there as no.1 and this is a very special achievement."

Despite the defeat to Watford, Liverpool still sit comfortably clear at the top of the table on 79 points.

Arsenal amassed a total of 90 points in their unbeaten season, winning 26 games and drawing 12.
