Fourth Star Trek film gets go-ahead
JJ Abrams reveals that work is underway on a fourth film in the rebooted Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek director JJ Abrams has revealed that he is working on a fourth movie in the rebooted franchise.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto took on the iconic roles of Captain Kirk and Spock when Abrams masterminded a reimagining of the sci-fi classic with 2009's Star Trek, which spawned two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

For the past few years the franchise has remained in limbo, but appearing at Paramount's investor day on Tuesday, Abrams confirmed that film number four is deep in development.

"We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you've just never seen before," he said.

"We're thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we're talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can't wait for you to see what we're cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper."

Other cast members expected to return for the new film include Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and John Cho.
