The BBC has officially announced plans for the launch of BBC News - a new global TV news channel - in April 2023.
The new service will replace the BBC News channel in the UK and the BBC World News channel internationally and is the latest step in the corporation's ongoing cost-cutting measures.
As a result, UK viewers will see more news content relating to global issues, although there will be capacity for the UK version of the channel to switch to bespoke live coverage for events of major domestic importance.
The channel will broadcast live from London during UK daytime hours, before switching to Singapore and then Washington DC overnight - moves that will cause around 70 job losses in London but create 20 new jobs in the US capital.
Another cost-cutting measure will be to "visualise" key radio shows for broadcast on the UK feed of the channel, starting with Nicky Campbell's weekday morning show on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Naja Nielsen, digital director at BBC News, said: "Our aim is to create the best live and breaking video news service in the world - on our web pages, our apps, on BBC iPlayer and on our new TV news channel.
"The way audiences consume news is changing. In recent years we've seen a huge surge in audiences coming to our live coverage, with tens of millions following live pages when big stories and events unfold.
"As the world's most trusted source of news, with a huge depth and breadth of expertise, the BBC is uniquely placed to offer audiences the best analysis and explanation as these stories are unfolding.
"So we are investing in new capability to cover breaking news stories, and our news channel and digital teams will work hand in hand to bring the best journalism to audiences both at home and abroad."
BBC News will be available without adverts in the UK and will be ad-supported globally.
