Stanislas Wawrinka has overcome defending champion Novak Djokovic in four sets to take his first ever US Open crown.

The Swiss, who has won the Australian and French Opens in his career, sealed a 6-7(1) 6-4 7-5 6-3 victory at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Wawrinka managed to come from a set down to win the showdown after Djokovic began struggling physically - requiring his trainer to come onto court twice to treat foot blisters.

Djokovic started strongly as he went an early break up in the first set, but Wawrinka forced a tie-break, which the Serbian comfortably won 7-1.

The tide began to turn in the second set when the Swiss broke to go 3-1 up, and even though Djokovic managed to break back, he lost serve to give Wawrinka set point.

The third set was a battle for both players as it lasted one hour and 15 minutes, but the now three-time Grand-Slam champion came out on top as he broke to clinch a 2-1 set lead.

It then took just under an hour for Wawrinka to complete the victory as he snatched Djokovic's serve at the first time of asking in the fourth set.

The 31-year-old is the oldest male winner of the US Open since Ken Rosewall's victory in 1970 at the age of 35.
