The challenge of selecting 'the best tennis matches of all time' can be a contradictory and perplexing debate, with many tennis fans often contesting the selection vehemently. That's because every era has seen some incredible talent come through the ranks - Bjorn Borg or John Mcenroe, Steffi Graf or Monica Seles, Pete Sampras or Andre Agassi, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal – to name but a few. To make the decision more complicated still, some people might be impartial to a player and able to simply enjoy the sport for all its beauty, something we all must envy.

At our table of debate at IHCTA we agreed that although picking just one greatest match can never be easy and will always ultimately remain a personal preference; no one could deny that everyone has been lucky enough to witness some magical moments and great rivalries on the court generation after generation. Now that's what true greatness looks like!

Bjorn Borg v John McEnroe

Drawing from decades of incredible match-ups, it's hard not to place the fourth-set tiebreaker between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe high on any list. The clash was one of fire and ice as fiery American McEnroe went toe-to-toe with the stoic Swedish icon. After losing the opening set, Borg went on to level up but met fierce resistance from McEnroe in the fourth set's famous 34-point tiebreaker. Despite having two championship points, Borg couldn't put away McEnroe who managed to save five match points before taking the set. To begin the deciding fifth set, Borg found himself 15–40 down on his serve only for him to go on an incredible 19-point streak that secured him a momentous victory at Wimbledon.

Goran Ivanisevic v Pat Rafter

On July 4th, 2001, the game in tennis occurred when Goran Ivanišević, an unseeded Croatian wildcard entry, and three-time Wimbledon finalist, faced off against Patrick Rafter. After defeating Carlos Moyá, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, and Tim Henman in a five-set rain-delayed semifinal match, Ivanišević was ready to take on one of the top players of the tournament. Despite Rafter being the previous year's runner-up and former US Open champion, Ivanišević pulled out a 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 2–6, 9–7 victory.

John Isner vs Nicolas Mahut

The longest game in tennis ever, lasting a total of 665 minutes (11 hours and 5 minutes), happened between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut during the first round of the men's singles at Wimbledon in 2010. At the All England Club in London, both Isner and Mahut served like clockwork throughout the four initial sets which were completed in one day. As there was no natural light left, they returned on the following day to continue their meticulously protracted fifth set. Continuously aiming to outlast each other they valiantly held their serves until play had to be suspended again due to lack of natural light, resulting in their dazzling match being extended over three days before Isner finally triumphed by a clinching scoreline of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6 and 70-68.

Federer vs Nadal

The biggest tennis tournament of them all, Wimbledon, was host to an iconic final back in 2007. All-time greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal battled it out for the ultimate prize of a grand slam victory, and the match still stands proudly as the biggest Wimbledon final of the past quarter-century. For years, Nadal had come out on top at French Open meetings between the pair but Federer had managed to take home the title from the previous year's Wimbledon - taking out Nadal in a hard-fought match. In what seemed like an eternity standing courtside waiting for one man to break away with a certain victory, Federer eventually pulled away after nearly four hours of tense tennis against his arch-rival. With wasted opportunities by Nadal in the deciding set, Federer capitalized on this and propelled himself towards a century-defining win with a scoreline of 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.

Venus Williams vs. Lindsay Davenport

In 2005, Davenport was the best player closing in on her first-ever Wimbledon title. She sailed to the finals easily with strong victories behind her; she seemed unstoppable. That is until she faced Venus Williams - a four-set battle stretching almost three hours long. Landing match points twice, Davenport ultimately lost 4-6, 7-6, 9-7, and later admitted that Williams was superior mentally despite her capabilities as a player. This epic match will not soon be forgotten and served as the defining moment in either woman's vast career.

Pete Sampras v Agassi

Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi were two of the best tennis players in the 90s. Though they certainly had their differences in style - Sampras was cool and stoic, while Agassi lived life on the edge - when it came to playing each other on a home court at the US Open, you knew it was going to be an exciting show. Indeed, the match did not disappoint: all four sets went to tie-breaks, with Sampras winning three out of four by way of his powerful serve. Neither player was able to break serve throughout the entirety of the match; in a testament to both their talent and their commitment to entertaining the crowd, at its conclusion, there was a long-standing ovation for each man as they embraced an iconic moment of sportsmanship.

Conclusion

The 2010 Wimbledon men's singles tournament saw a match for the ages between Isner and Mahut, as well as a memorable final face-off between Nadal and Federer. Meanwhile, Venus Williams earned her victory over Davenport with her mental strength, while Sampras and Agassi provided an iconic moment in sportsmanship. No matter what moments you remember most, they all remain in your memory forever.ID:513512:1false2false3false:!x!:: from db desktop :LenBod:collect6904:
