Dustin Johnson has announced his resignation from the PGA Tour, committing his future to the LIV Golf International Series in the process.
Last week, the former world number one was the surprise name on the entry list for the inaugural tournament at the Centurion Club in Hertfordshire, which begins on Thursday.
Alongs with other high-profile names on that list, who were joined by Phil Mickelson on Monday, the belief was that they intended to try to participate in PGA Tour events in the future, despite the ongoing fight with officials.
However, on the back of Kevin Na ending his time with the PGA Tour on Saturday, Johnson has now followed suit in a move which has the potential to be one of the most important decisions in the history of the sport.
The 37-year-old is now ineligible to feature at future Ryder Cups, something which may still apply to his new rivals if the PGA Tour and DP World Tour attempt to enforce such rules.
Speaking at a press conference, Johnson said: "Obvious at this time it is difficult to speak on what the consequences may be. Right now, I resign my membership from the tour, I'm going to play here for now. What the consequences might be, I obviously cannot comment on that right now.
When quizzed on his future appearances at major tournaments, Johnson added: "Again, I can't answer for the majors. Hopefully they are going to allow us to play. Obviously I am exempt for the majors, so I plan on playing there unless I hear otherwise."
With the major tournaments run by different organisations to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, it is currently expected that any of the players who have qualified for the upcoming US Open and Open Championship will feature as planned.
