Wolverhampton Wanderers looking to equal 48-year streak in Aston Villa game

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be attempting to equal a 48-year streak when they play host to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be attempting to match a near five-decade streak when they play host to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The arrival of Julen Lopetegui has helped Wolves move away from the relegation zone, the club currently sitting seven points clear with four matches remaining.

However, the West Midlands outfit endured their lowest note of the season last weekend as they lost 6-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion, conceding five times in the opening 47 minutes.

Although none of the clubs below them managed to win their most recent fixture, Wolves took a significant hit in terms of goal difference.

While Wolves have lost four of their most recent five away encounters, it has generally been a different story at Molineux under Lopetegui.

Despite notable home defeats to Bournemouth and Leeds United, Wolves have since put together a three-match winning streak on familiar territory.

Chelsea, Brentford and Crystal Palace have all been defeated since April 8, a necessary run to take the club to brink of extending their stay in the top flight.

Should Wolves be able to topple one of their fierce rivals on Saturday afternoon, it would mark the first time since 1975 that they have recorded four successive home victories in the first tier of English football.

Furthermore, Wolves are also attempting to post four triumphs in a row with a clean sheet for the first time since the back end of 1969, when they made it five consecutive shutouts with maximum points.

Despite being on a four-game undefeated streak versus Villa, Wolves are facing opponents who had possessed a Premier League scoring record under Unai Emery until last weekend.

The narrow 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford marked the first time since November where Villa had failed to score in a top-flight fixture, a run of 20 games under new manager Emery beating the previous run by two matches.

Lopetegui and Emery have already played out two 1-1 draws this season, one when Villarreal hosted Sevilla in September and the other when Villa welcomed Wolves to their home ground in January.
