Manchester United reportedly line up a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi as the clock ticks on Edinson Cavani's time at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi as an ideal replacement for soon-to-be free agent Edinson Cavani.

Cavani's contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of June, and there is a growing expectation that the former PSG striker will end his short-lived stint with the Red Devils this summer.

As United seek to bolster their attack, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already ruled out a move for Sergio Aguero, but big-money transfers for the likes of Erling Braut Haaland and Harry Kane have been mooted.

However, Gazzetta Dello Sport claims that Icardi would represent a cut-price alternative compared to the likes of Haaland and Kane, both of whom would be unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund or Tottenham Hotspur for less than £100m this summer.

The report claims that PSG may be willing to let Icardi leave for €40m (£34m) in the upcoming transfer window, although much could depend on whether they can strike a permanent deal for Everton loanee Moise Kean, who continues to battle Icardi for the number nine spot at the Parc des Princes.

Icardi's campaign has been hampered by injuries, but he nevertheless boasts a respectable tally of five goals and four assists from 15 Ligue 1 appearances.
