Bruno Fernandes breaks a Champions League record for English clubs after setting up Anthony Elanga in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes has set a new Champions League record for English clubs after his side's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 battle.

The Red Devils quickly fell behind to Joao Felix's header at the Wanda Metropolitano and largely struggled for attacking inspiration against the well-drilled La Liga champions.

However, just as he did at Leeds United a few days before, Anthony Elanga came off the bench to slot home in the final knockings and restore parity for Man United in the Spanish capital.

Fernandes provided the assist for Elanga's equaliser, meaning that the Portuguese playmaker has now set up his teammates in six consecutive Champions League appearances - a new record for a player at an English club.

David Beckham had previously claimed an assist in five Champions League games on the bounce for Man United before drawing a blank in a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the 1998-99 group stage.

Fernandes now has nine goals and 14 assists to his name from 34 matches in all tournaments this season as Ralf Rangnick's side return to Premier League action against Watford on Saturday.
