Jurgen Klopp says that "it does not make sense" to field Jordan Henderson against Tottenham Hotspur, having left the midfielder out of his starting lineup.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he left Jordan Henderson out of his starting lineup to face Tottenham Hotspur due to fitness concerns.

The England international was the surprise omission from the Reds' XI for Saturday lunchtime's clash at Wembley Stadium, being replaced by Naby Keita in the only change from the 2-1 win against Leicester City.

Henderson has been restricted to just one start in the Premier League so far this season - that narrow win at the King Power Stadium a fortnight ago - after missing a chunk of pre-season action because of his World Cup exploits.

Klopp has suggested that the club captain could be recalled for the midweek Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain, however, with a run of five games before the end of the month.

"We need Hendo so much and I don't think it makes sense in the moment to play him day in, day out, that's the thing," he told Sky Sports News. "It is still a bit adapting to the intensity.

"Hendo needs his full physical strength. I'm sure he'll have that today when he comes on and on Tuesday as well."

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made three changes to his starting lineup, meanwhile, bringing in Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Harry Winks.
