Jack Laugher: 'Room for improvement despite gold'

Laugher: 'Room for improvement despite gold'
Team England's Jack Laugher tells Sports Mole that there is still room for improvement despite opening his Commonwealth Games campaign with gold in the 1m springboard.

Team England's Jack Laugher has insisted that he can still improve despite opening his Commonwealth Games campaign with a gold medal in the 1m springboard final this evening.

The 23-year-old successfully defended his title on the Gold Coast, putting together six consistent dives to earn a total score of 438 - comfortably clear of Australia's James Connor and James Heatly of Scotland in second and third respectively.

Laugher - Olympic champion in the 3m synchro - will look to add another gold to his collection when he takes part in the individual 3m event on Thursday, and he believes that his victory on the opening night of diving action will set him up well for more success in the coming days.

"[I'm feeling] really good. I mean, it was a really good score, almost 440, almost my PB, but I didn't quite hit anything. Everything was really good, the tops were fantastic, I felt really good going out there but my entry was a little bit shaky," he told Sports Mole.

"I put that down to a little bit of nerves, trying to defend my title, also being outdoors, all those different pressures, but I'm really happy overall with my performance. Extremely proud to represent my country and to win another title for England, so very happy.

"Three metres is my main board - I am obviously a little bit nervous for it. My first 3m at an international competition of the year, it will be, because of my injuries I've had unfortunately.

"It was nice to get [the 1m] out of the way. Every day is different - especially in diving - it's really easy for things to potentially go wrong. But I've got high hopes, training's been really good, really enjoying the pool, really enjoying the place, loving the village, really high hopes for 3m."

Laugher will also take part in the 3m synchro on the Gold Coast, with that event taking place on Friday night.
