Jason Roy has broken the record for highest one-day international score by an England player as his 180 helped the tourists beat Australia in the first ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The opener's innings, which contained 16 fours and five sixes, saw him past Alex Hales's 171 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2016.

Roy's contributions steered England past Australia's 304-8 in 48.5 overs, beating the Melbourne record of 297-4 Australia set while defeating England in 2011, to win by five wickets.

The 27-year-old surpassed his previous best ODI knock, the 162 against Sri Lanka at The Oval two years ago, having successfully overturned an lbw dismissal on 91 with Adam Zampa's ball shown to have struck the Englishman outside the line of off-stump.

Earlier on, Aaron Finch's 107 saw the hosts post 304-8 after being put in to bat and England started rapidly in reply, only to lose Jonny Bairstow and Hales in quick succession at 60-2.

Roy shared an England-record third-wicket stand of 221 with Joe Root (91 not out off 110) before being caught at deep backward square with 24 runs required, but despite a number of late dismissals, including captain Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, England calmly secured a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
