Great Britain teammates Philip Graves and Thomas Bishop helped Benson get to the front of the race throughout the cycling, allowing the 21-year-old to push ahead during the run.

It looked as though Portugal's Joao Silva was going to catch the Briton in the closing stages as he closed the gap on the leader to just 50m on the final lap, but he could not overhaul Benson's lead.

Azerbaijan entrant Rostyslav Pevtsov also finished strongly, posting one of the fastest times in the run to clinch the final spot on the podium in front of his home fans.

The result means that Benson has qualified for next year's Rio Olympics.

Bishop finished 16th, while Ireland's Russell White came in 36th and Graves crossed the line to finish 46th, over 15 minutes behind the winner.
