Karolina Pliskova stuns Venus Williams to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time.

Karolina Pliskova has caused an upset by knocking sixth seed Venus Williams out of the US Open in the fourth-round stage.

The Czech player, who had never before progressed into the quarter-finals, sealed a 4-6 6-4 7-6(3) in just under two-and-a-half hours at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Williams started off strongly on the hard court as she raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but she was pulled back when Pliskova nabbed a double break.

It was not enough for the 24-year-old to to take the lead, though, as Williams broke to take the opener, but the American dropped serve twice to relinquish the second set.

Pliskova took control of the match as she went an early break up in the third, but her 36-year-old opponent fought back to take the decider to 4-4.

Pliskova snatched serve for a second time in the set, but Williams came from behind again to force through a tie-break.

It was not to be for the seven-time Grand Slam champion as she lost the breaker 7-3.
