Britain's Kyle Edmund suffers a surprise defeat by Canadian wildcard Steven Diez in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Britain's Kyle Edmund has been knocked out of the Rogers Cup thanks to a surprise defeat at the hands of Canadian wildcard Steven Diez in the first round.

Diez, ranked 108 places below Edmund at 192 in the world, won 3-6 6-1 6-2 to claim his first win in the main draw of an ATP tournament.

The world number 84 broke in the fourth game and took the first set in 31 minutes, but lost successive service games, breaking back once, to drop the second as his opponent began to take control.

Diez duly piled on the misery with two further breaks in the final set to wrap up victory in Toronto in just over an hour and three quarters.

The 21-year-old Briton was playing for the first time since winning both singles rubbers in his nation's Davis Cup victory over Serbia last weekend.
