Grigor Dimitrov says that any news of an opponent failing a drug test is "sad" for the sport, having been left surprised by Dan Evans's positive test for cocaine.

World number 11 Grigor Dimitrov has admitted that he was surprised to hear about Dan Evans's positive test for cocaine, which he believes is "sad" news for the sport.

Evans announced on Friday afternoon that he failed a drug test in April, potentially seeing the British number three handed a ban of up to four years by the International Tennis Federation.

Dimitrov, who got the better of Daniil Medvedev to make it through to the last four of the Aegon Championships, is unsure exactly what punishment Evans now faces, having been given an initial provisional sentence by the ITF.

"I just heard this, I had no clue. Any news like this, it's sad for tennis," Sky Sports News quotes him as saying. "It is what it is, and there are circumstances to everything. As I said, it's sad to see. Whatever it is after that, I think it's to be determined."

Evans represented Great Britain in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup around the time of his failed drugs test, while also competing in events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
