World number three Roger Federer marked his return to action with a straight-sets victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who has not played since the Australian Open because of a knee injury and illness, came through the second-round match 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes.

Federer broke once in the first set to take a 4-2 lead, and that was all that was required to nab the opener on the clay surface.

After earning a double break early in the second set, Federer suffered a wobble when Garcia-Lopez later snatched serve, but it was not enough to force a comeback.
