Novak Djokovic comes through a difficult test against world number 103 Stephane Robert to reach the third round of the Italian Open.

Novak Djokovic was tested by world number 103 Stephane Robert at the Italian Open on Wednesday, but managed to come through unscathed to reach the third round.

The top seed, who headed into the tournament as Madrid Masters champion, had a frustrating afternoon in Rome as the match ended 7-5 7-5 in the Serbian's favour.

Robert showed early intent as he was one point away from breaking Djokovic in the third game of the first set, but the world number one managed to hold.

The 11-time Grand Slam champion created just two break points in the opening set, which he eventually won in 43 minutes.

Robert went an early break up in the second, sensing that he could cause an upset, but Djokovic managed to break back to draw 4-4 on games before wrapping up the set.
