Heather Watson beats Sara Errani in three sets to progress into the second round of the Italian Open.

Britain's Heather Watson defeated 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani in the first round of the Italian Open on Monday.

The 23-year-old, who has never progressed further than the third round in a Grand Slam, sealed a 6-4 3-6 6-0 victory in Rome this afternoon.

It took just over an hour for the first set to finish as serve was broken in seven of the 10 games played, but it was Watson who took the lead.

The Brit looked to have squandered her chance as she failed to convert seven break points, but she snatched Errani's serve in the next game to take the first set.

Errani swiftly went 3-0 up in the second set before drawing level, but Watson clinched the win by storming through the decider in 32 minutes without dropping serve.
