The Brit, who received an opening-round bye in California, was playing in his first ATP event since the birth of his daughter on February 7.

A double fault saw Murray broken by his Spanish opponent for a 3-1 lead early on.

However, world number two Murray responded to level up the set, which he eventually won in 43 minutes.

The second set went with serve all the way to a tie-breaker, with Murray dropping just three points to come through.

"It was very different conditions to what I have been practising and playing in over the past five weeks, against a tough, unorthodox player," said the victorious Scot.

"He's got quite a different game. He's a very smart player, as well, an intelligent player, and often makes the right decisions."

The second seed will now take on Argentina's Federico Delbonis for a place in round four.
