Cuevas got off to a promising start at Roland Garros, but Berdych fought back for a 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 win that will see him face David Ferrer in the next round.

The Uruguayan broke his opponent in the very first game of the match to gain an early advantage, and that proved important as far as the opener was concerned, with the rest of the set going with serve.

It would prove to be the only service game that Berdych dropped in the match, though, and from then on the seventh seed gave very little away.

A solitary break in the fourth game of the second set was enough for the Czech to win it 6-3, and things got even better for him in the third as a run of five consecutive games helped him to a 6-2 win.

Berdych needed to survive a break point in the final set to keep his nose in front of Cuevas, but he then broke to move into a 6-5 lead before serving out the set with a love game.
