Madison Keys has announced that she will miss the Australian Open after undergoing surgery on her wrist.

The 21-year-old underwent the procedure shortly after the end of the WTA season but will not be back in time to take part in the first major of 2017.

The world number eight revealed that the operation went "very well", but plans to take her time to recover.

"The bad news is that I will not be ready to play the 2017 Australian Open," she wrote on Twitter.

"Three days after the year-end WTA Championships I had minor arthroscopic surgery on my left wrist. The procedure was very short, did not involve any tendon issues and went very well.

"I don't want to rush back and need to take my time to perform my best on the court."

The Australian Open will begin on January 16.
