Leicester Tigers sign Jean de Villiers

Former South Africa centre Jean de Villiers will join up with Leicester Tigers once he recovers from a fractured jaw.

Former South Africa international Jean de Villiers has completed a move to Leicester Tigers.

The 34-year-old captained the Springboks at the ongoing Rugby World Cup, but he was forced to retire from the international form of the game because of the fractured jaw that he suffered during the 46-6 pool victory over Samoa.

However, upon his recovery, the centre will join up with his new teammates at Welford Road in early December.

"Jean brings invaluable experience to the squad. He is among the leading centres in the modern game and has played at the very highest level for a significant period of time," director of rugby Richard Cockerill told the club's official website.

"In recent seasons we've brought in players like Brad Thorn and Lote Tuqiri from successful environments in the southern hemisphere and they have made a significant contribution here.

"The signing of Jean de Villiers is another move in that style and we look forward to welcoming him and his family to the Tigers and to him starting work with us on December 1."

In total, De Villiers made 109 Test appearances for South Africa.
