Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend reveals that Sean Maitland's operation "was a success", and a World Cup return is now on the cards.

Scotland winger Sean Maitland is facing a race against time to be fit and firing ahead of this autumn's Rugby World Cup.

The 26-year-old, who has been out of action since January, had to undergo surgery on his injured shoulder last week which has ruled him out of the remainder of Glasgow Warriors' season.

However, Maitland, capped 15 time for his country, harbours hopes of recovering in time to play a part at the showpiece tournament later this year.

Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "Sean got some tough news last week when it became clear his shoulder would require surgery. But the operation at Spire Murrayfield Hospital was a success and he's targeting to be back for the World Cup."

Maitland will join Aviva Premiership side London Irish at the end of the current campaign.
