Michael McIlorum will not return to action until 2017 because of a serious ankle injury, according to Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane.

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane does not expect Michael McIlorum to play again this year.

The 28-year-old has undergone surgery on the broken and dislocated ankle that he suffered during last month's World Club Series defeat by Brisbane.

"Micky's operation went well. The surgeon is really happy," Wane told reporters.

"It will be a long one. I can't see him playing again this year."

The hooker has made 220 appearances for the Warriors, during which time he has won two Grand Finals.
