Former Swansea City defender Kevin Austin diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

Former Swansea City defender Kevin Austin confirms that he is battling pancreatic cancer but stresses that his condition is not terminal.

Former Swansea City defender Kevin Austin has confirmed that he has pancreatic cancer.

However, the 45-year-old quashed rumours on social media claiming that the disease was terminal, stressing that it is "under control".

Austin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last June and has since started treatment which has helped stabilise his condition.

"I appreciate the nice messages coming from supporters from Swansea - they are fantastic fans - and all the clubs I have played for but I needed to let people know that the rumours being spread just aren't true," Austin told the Swans' official website.

"I have pancreatic cancer, but my doctors have said they are happy with the way things are going and it is under control. My family is in a good place too, and I just wanted people to know the truth."

Austin, who also counts Lincoln City, Leyton Orient and Barnsley among his former clubs, won seven caps for Trinidad and Tobago and played more than 500 games during his career.
