BBC inadvertently brands Newcastle United players "scum"

The BBC apologises after a subtitling error leads to Newcastle United players being referred to as "black and white scum" during Match of the Day.

The BBC has apologised for an "unfortunate" error after it accidentally branded Newcastle United players "black and white scum".

The error came in the subtitles for Match of the Day's coverage of the Magpies' 1-1 home draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

The subtitling software accidentally substituted the word "comma" with the word "scum" during remarks about Reds striker Daniel Sturridge.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "Our live subtitling service is normally very accurate and makes our content much more accessible, but there are times when unfortunate errors occur."

Newcastle have made a decent start to life back in the Premier League, taking 10 points from their opening seven games to sit ninth in the table.
