Respected journalist Andy Mitten claims that a "controlled explosion" might take place at Old Trafford after the "bomb squad" were sent into the stadium.

Respected journalist Andy Mitten has claimed that a "controlled explosion" might take place at Old Trafford after the "bomb squad" were sent into the stadium.

Manchester United were due to face Bournemouth on the final weekend of the Premier League season, but the match was abandoned when it was revealed that a 'suspect package' had been found in the NW Quadrant of the ground.

The decision to postpone the match was taken fairly quickly and according to Mitten, the package in question "relates to a mobile phone device".

"Told by reliable sources that bomb squad in attendance at OT. Relates to mobile phone device. Might have to carry out controlled explosion," Mitten tweeted.

Man United have revealed that they will provide "further announcements" throughout the afternoon.
