England's penalty-shootout victory over Colombia attracts almost 24m viewers on ITV.

England's penalty-shootout victory over Colombia in the last 16 of the World Cup attracted almost 24m television viewers, ITV has revealed.

The broadcaster confirmed that 23.6m people tuned in to watch the climax of the game, while a record 3.3m people watched it online via the ITV Hub application.

The game is said to have been the most-watched live sporting event since England vs. Portugal in the 2004 European Championships.

England's group matches against Tunisia, Belgium and Panama proved less popular, attracting between 14 and 18m viewers.

The record viewership for an England match stands at 26.2m, set during the 1990 World Cup when the Three Lions lost to West Germany on penalties.
