Dermot Drummy killed himself six months after losing his job at Crawley Town, an inquest has heard.
The League Two club sacked Drummy in May 2017, and the former Chelsea coach went on to seek counselling for his "low mood".
The final inquest into Drummy's death was held on Thursday, April 5 at The Old Courthouse in Hatfield.
The court heard how the 56-year-old's body was found by police officers, hanging in a wooded area off the A414 in Hoddesdon on November 27 last year.
Assistant coroner for Hertfordshire Edward Solomons recorded a verdict of suicide.
Police had received a call from Drummy's wife at 9.57am saying that he had gone missing, which was "out of character".
A search began and police discovered Drummy's body in woodland, and he was pronounced dead at 12.29pm.
Police later found a note from Drummy to his family which he signed off "I hope you forgive me".
Drummy, a former youth player at Arsenal, took over at Crawley in April 2016, departing the club 13 months later.
