Championship basement side Charlton Athletic launch an investigation after Companies House receive a false document announcing the resignation of its chief executive.

Charlton Athletic have confirmed that they have launched an investigation after Companies House were falsely informed about the resignation of chief executive Katrien Meire.

The signed document, which claimed that Meire had tendered her resignation on December 5, was posted to the government agency's website last week after 'satisfying the required checks'.

"The club is aware of a document that has appeared on Companies House," said Charlton in a statement on its website. "This document is false. The club is investigating the matter as it is something we take seriously."

The Addicks are currently four points from safety at the bottom of the Championship having won just five times all season, leading to fan protests aimed at Belgian owner Roland Duchatelet.

Filing a false document with Companies House carries a maximum punishment of two years in prison.
