The Australian Olympic team are evacuated from the Athletes' Village in Rio due to a "small fire" breaking out in the basement of their building.

The Australian Olympic team has been evacuated from their hotel due to a "small fire" in the basement of their building.

The Aussie team have had well-documented problems with the Athletes' Village already this summer, initially refusing to move into their accommodation after claiming that it was "not safe or ready".

The athletes did eventually move in earlier this week, but they were temporarily evacuated this evening after a fire broke out.

"The cause of the fire is unknown and we have just been let back into the building," the Australian Olympic Committee wrote on Twitter.

"The fire brigade were quickly on the scene and the AOC's emergency management plan was put in place."

This summer's Olympic Games in Rio are due to begin on August 5.
