The New Zealander snatched victory in the Sonoma Grand Prix in California on Sunday to claim double points and equal Montoya's total.

However, Dixon was crowned champion as he had one more race win than Montoya, who had been leading the standings all season until the final showdown.

Before the race, drivers from every team paid tribute to British racer Justin Wilson by linking arms in the pit lane while national anthem 'God Save The Queen' was played.

Wilson died in hospital last week at the age of 37 after being hit on the head by debris from a crash during a race in Pennsylvania.
