Former Masters champion Sandy Lyle believes that Europe's Ryder Cup victory will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in sport.

Europe's team captain Jose Olazabal witnessed his side retain the elusive honour after fighting back from a 10-6 deficit to win the contest by a point on the final day.

"I would say [it was the greatest comeback]," BBC Sport quotes Lyle as saying. "I keep wondering how this Ryder Cup team can keep improving but they do and yesterday was just amazing. That will be history in the books and will be remembered for many years."

Europe will defend the cup once again at Gleneagles in Scotland in two years' time.
