Troy Merritt clinched a maiden PGA Tour win with a three-shot victory at the Quicken Loans National in Virginia.

The 29-year-old propelled himself into contention on Saturday with a tournament-record 10-under-par 61 to earn a share of the lead with Kevin Chappell.

The American made good on that statement by carding a final-round 67 to finish on 18 under.

Merritt's closest challenge came from fellow American Rickie Fowler, who shot 69 to finish on 15 under, with Sweden's David Lingmerth one stroke further back.

England's Justin Rose finished in a six-way tie for fourth, along with Justin Thomas, Danny Lee, Bill Haas, Carl Pettersson and Jason Bohn.

Tiger Woods ended the tournament in a tie for 18th place after he recorded a final-round 68.
