Ernie Els records the worst score on an opening hole at Augusta as he six-putts to make nine in the first round of The Masters.

Ernie Els has recorded the worst first-hole score at The Masters after six-putting to make a nine at Augusta.

The 46-year-old South African, whose best finish at the Major was runner-up in 2000 and 2004, had a disaster on the opening hole by carding six bogeys.

The four-time Major champion hit the fairway with a 288-yard drive and after his second shot fell just short of the green, he sent his third three feet away from the hole.

Els required a simple putt for par, but he struggled and after a frustrating six attempts, the two-time Open winner finally found the hole.
