Result: Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton secures Spanish Grand Prix pole position

Lewis Hamilton edges out Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in qualifying to claim pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton has secured pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix after recording the fastest time during qualifying.

The Briton clocked a finish time of 1:22.000 to edge out Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by a fraction of a second.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo put in a near-flawless final lap to finish in third place, ahead of teammate Max Verstappen.

Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari was the fifth quickest during qualifying, with Sebastian Vettel in sixth, Valtteri Bottas in seventh, Carlos Sainz in eighth, Sergio Perez in ninth and Fernando Alonso rounding off the top 10.

The Spanish Grand Prix, which gets underway tomorrow, has seen nine different winners in as many years, with Rosberg emerging victorious in 2015.
