Mercedes's Nico Rosberg insists that pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is just a "small step" for his title hopes.

Nico Rosberg has insisted that securing pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a "small step" as he attempts to win the 2014 Formula 1 drivers' title.

The German's Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton currently tops the standings, but Rosberg can be crowned champion depending on where the Briton finishes tomorrow.

Rosberg told reporters: "It's only one step, a very small step. This weekend is about the championship, not about pole position. It would have been great if there was a Williams in between us, but that can always happen tomorrow."

Even, if Rosberg converts pole into a race win, Hamilton will still be world champion if he can finish second.
