Wigan Athletic reportedly move ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race to sign free agent Nick Powell.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly missed out on the signing of Nick Powell after it was claimed that he is due to move to Wigan Athletic.

The 22-year-old has attracted plenty of interest since his release from Manchester United, and it appeared that Wolves had won the race for his signature after Hull City boss Steve Bruce claimed that their former loanee has chosen to move to Molineux instead of the KC Stadium.

However, Powell unfollowed Wolves on Twitter on Monday night - less than 24 hours after following the West Midlands outfit on social media - and according to the Daily Mail, it is down to the former England Under-21 international showing a preference to link up with Wigan.

Powell spent the 2013-14 campaign at the DW Stadium, and Latics boss Gary Caldwell - a former teammate of Powell - is said to have tempted the striker back to the North-West.
