Summer signing Leander Dendoncker admits that he must build on his Wolverhampton Wanderers debut in order to earn a regular place in the starting lineup.

Leander Dendoncker has admitted that he was pleased to contribute to a clean sheet on his first appearance for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dendoncker has had to wait for his debut since arriving at Molineux earlier this month, but the Belgium international played on the right side of a back three as Wolves registered a 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup.

The 23-year-old has talked up the influence of teammate Conor Coady, but acknowledges that it is down to himself to earn a regular starting role.

Dendoncker told the club's official website: "For me, as a defender today, keeping the zero is maybe the most important and to not give away a lot of chances.

"We spoke very well and I think Conor Coady plays a big role in that, he speaks a lot, he talks a lot and I think that's very important. The defence needs to communicate a lot and I think we did well. I hope it can continue and we can keep winning. I'm glad for today's win.

"I have to keep on training hard. That's important for me. I'm happy with this first game but I know I'll have to do more and keep on working to help the team, then we will see."

Dendoncker is likely to feature on the bench when Wolves face West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
