Republic of Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews has praised the team's travelling supporters following the 4-0 Euro 2012 defeat to Spain.

The West Bromwich Albion midfielder expressed disappointment at his side's performance, but described the fans as a "credit" to the country.

"We shot ourselves in the foot again by conceding silly goals," he told RTE. "Spain are such a quality side and punish mistakes.

"We are playing for pride now and for the fans who have travelled in their thousands to support us."

He added: "[I'm] bitterly disappointed. You could hear the fans here, they are an absolute credit to the country and the team."

"Unfortunately we weren't able to give the fans what they deserved."

Goals from David Silva, Cesc Fabregas and a Fernando Torres double saw off the Irish and eliminated them from the competition.

Giovanni Trapattoni's men go into their final group game against Italy with only pride to play for.
