Walsall appoint first-team performance coach Jon Whitney as head coach on a game-by-game basis following the departure of Sean O'Driscoll.

Walsall have confirmed that Jon Whitney is in charge of the first team following the recent departure of Sean O'Driscoll.

The League One side sacked O'Driscoll after Saturday's defeat to Barnsley which made it just two wins in 11 for the Saddlers.

Whitney, who was previously the club's first-team performance coach, will be in charge for Saturday's match against Chesterfield.

Walsall still have a good chance to get promoted automatically this season. They are fourth in the table and five points behind Wigan Athletic in second, but do have a game in hand on the Latics.
